My name is Lorena, and I am the teacher/creator behind Fabulous Figs. I LOVE all things pretty, and I am addicted to shoes, clothes, decor, and hosting parties and get-togethers. I find immense joy in curating spaces that exude chicness and style, whether it’s my personal environment or a shared space like a classroom.
Where I’m from & Where I teach
I was born and raised in El Paso, Texas. I grew up in the projects in the Northeast. I am the daughter of immigrant parents who came to the United States from Juarez, Mexico, to give their children a better life. Growing up, I did not have much but had all the love and support I needed. My parents had minimal schooling, so at a very young age, they instilled in me the importance of graduating and furthering my education. I must admit school was challenging for me as a child because of the language barrier, and I knew I had to work harder than my classmates to accomplish my learning goals. Luckily, I had older siblings who could help me with homework and answer my questions. Growing up, I was always mindful of my parents’ sacrifices, and to this day, I do not take anything for granted. I was determined to graduate high school like my siblings and be the first in my family to attend college. With a lot of hard work and determination, I graduated from high school and became the first Latina in my family to graduate from college. My upbringing, life experiences, and my parents’ unconditional love and support molded me into who I am today.
I moved to Arizona in 2005. I live with my husband and our Shih Tzu, Oreo. Moving from a small town to a big city was a drastic change, but Arizona has become my home because this is where I met the love of my life, so the big change was worth it.
I graduated from Ottawa University, received my Bachelor’s in Early Childhood Education, and have a Master’s in Bilingual/Multicultural Education from Northern Arizona University. I have taught for over 15 years in private, charter, and public schools – 1 year in Middle School, one year in Preschool, and two years in Kindergarten. I’m in my twelfth year as a Title 1 elementary school teacher in Southwestern Arizona. If I had to choose, I’d say my favorite grades to teach are first and second grade! As an ELL learner myself, I love incorporating lots of engaging visuals, cooperative learning, and kinesthetic activities into my daily curriculum.
You might find me sharing ideas, classroom inspiration, and my teacher wardrobe on Instagram when I’m not in the classroom or with my family.
